The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
