End of the Era for Manual Motorists? Increasing Numbers of Student Drivers Opt for Automatic Cars in Exams

One in each four driving tests in Britain are now completed in automatic vehicles, according to latest figures, as learners choose more eco-friendly cars and avoid stick shifts.

Rising Popularity Toward Automatics

Statistics indicate that over 469,000 of the approximately 1.8 million road tests undertaken in Great Britain in the previous year were done in self-shifting cars.

Insurer a major driving organization said the shift is being propelled by the United Kingdom's restriction on recent petrol and diesel cars set to begin in 2030.

A driving school executive, a senior leader of a major driver education organization, explained that the need to know how to drive a stick-shift vehicle is becoming "less important for numerous people."

Certification Rules

To get a full driving licence for the UK, a driver must ace their exam in a car with manual gears.

If the assessment is undertaken in an automatic vehicle, the driver would obtain a Category B Auto licence, restricting them to driving cars with self-shifting gearbox only.

Northern Ireland issues its separate motorist certifications.

Upcoming Developments

The expert commented that motorists and students are "feeling secure with the idea of their driving future being electronically powered."

"Moving forward to the year 2030 and the restriction on the new petrol and diesel vehicles, increasing numbers of student drivers will choose to practice in an eco-friendly car as those are the only cars they will intend to operate."

Political Shifts

Following the political race in the previous year, the current administration pledged to bring back the petrol and diesel ban to the year 2030, after the former leader the prior government pushed it back to 2035.

Economic Perks

The lower day-to-day running costs of electric and hybrid vehicles is also appealing to a lot of individuals.

Battery-powered cars can be significantly more expensive than a combustion engine vehicle or a hybrid initially, but the cost disparity is narrowing.

Moreover, those with battery-powered vehicles can expect to cut costs on gas and repairs expenses.

Teacher Viewpoint

An industry professional, the owner of a driving academy in an English city, said that self-shifting vehicles are "the direction things are heading" as the car industry shifts to EVs.

For learner drivers, Ms Howe explained, self-shifting cars can make the assessment easier, as "there's just a lot less to do."

Novice motorists can "ruin a transmission system," Ms Howe said, adding that nerves may cause them to stop abruptly the motor.

She also pointed out the trend was good for traffic safety as "motorists feel less fatigued" driving an auto transmission vehicle.

"It just makes life so much easier - it's fewer tasks for the driver to do so they can concentrate more on the driving conditions."

Statistical Increase

Motorists' perceptions toward electric vehicles have rapidly changed in just the past ten years.

The number of licensing exams conducted in automatics was over 87,000 in the 2012-2013 period, or 6.12% of total exams, based on the figures.

That statistic increased to over 479,000 in the most recent full year, the last period with complete data, or 26%.

An industry group is forecasting that nearly 30% of each assessment will be taken in automatics in 2025/26.

Gender Shifts

The numbers also indicated that an increasing number of males are opting to take their tests in automatic cars.

In 2012-2013, 23.2% of student drivers taking exams in automatic vehicles were male drivers. Last year, that number was 39.1%.

The success percentage for automatic cars last year was slightly lower than for manuals. But, the gap has decreased since over a decade ago.
